HolstonConnect, a subsidiary of Holston Electric Cooperative that aims to bring gigabit Internet to thousands of unserved residents in rural East Tennessee, has filed a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) retransmission consent complaint against Nexstar Media Group, currently one of the largest broadcast television companies in the United States.

With many companies who offer telephone, video and internet, signing up for service means signing a service contract for a specified period of time, or paying a hefty fine to cancel early. Not with HolstonConnect! Our customers are not required to sign a contract.

HolstonConnect, a wholly-owned, not-for-profit subsidiary of Holston Electric Cooperative, was announced among 33 cooperative recipients as winners of the Federal Communications Commission Connect American Fund II (CAF II) reverse auction on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Winning electric cooperatives will collectively receive $220 million over ten years to help defray the costs of deploying broadband in unserved areas.

It all began in 2016 when Holston Electric Cooperative began installation of 110 miles of fiber backbone to connect powerlines and substations. This smart grid network would modernize the electric system and allow for digital technology that would detect and react to changes in electricity supply usage while improving operating efficiencies and increasing service quality.
